In 2013, during a hearing of the Italian Marines case, a former chief justice of India angrily asked Subramanian Swamy, “Who are you”? The BJP’s loose cannon may not have taken on the judge then but on Friday he declared his authority on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, to the whole world.
The self-proclaimed legal luminary anointed BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi a Brahmin. “With the authority vested in me, I hereby appoint NaMo as a Brahmin since he has Brahminical gunas,” Swamy tweeted on his handle @swamy39.
The tweet came in the backdrop of the political controversy over Priyanka Gandhi’s “neech rajneeti” comment which was then used by Modi to draw political mileage.
Soon, the hashtag #WithTheAuthorityVestedInMe’ became the top trending topic and the twitterati had fun coming up with their own versions of it. While @TheUnRealTimes tweeted ‘Yogendra Yadav:#WithTheAuthorityVestedInMe, I hereby attest that Arvind is the messiah of secularism and incorruptibility’, @MithiChhuri posted ‘#WithTheAuthorityVestedInMe: I declare the caste-based reservations in India as illegal. @saaxenanurag took a dig at the SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav with ‘#WithTheAuthorityVestedInMe I hereby demand Mulayam Singh Yadav to give a speech which people can understand’ while journalist Sachin Kalbagh joked,’ #WithTheAuthorityVestedInMe, I declare Langda to be India’s national mango. It has more gunas than Alphonso.’
Quick to bask in the infamy, Swamy soon declared that “I have succeeded in my mission. Cong propaganda on OBC has fizzled”.
