India on Wednesday named senior IFS officer Talmiz Ahmad as its new Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The 1974-batch Additional Secretary-rank officer, currently Director General of Indian Council for World Affairs (ICWA), will succeed C M Bhandari.

He is expected to take up his assignment shortly, External Affairs Ministry said.
Ahmad is considered an expert on Gulf region. After the kidnapping of three Indian truck drivers in Iraq in 2004, the government had deputed him to seek their release.
Prior to his assignment with the ICWA, Ahmad was on deputation to the Petroleum Ministry where he was involved in negotiation of several international energy cooperation initiatives, including the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline.
