ACCUSING THE Mulayam government of not taking adequate steps to check increasing terrorist activities in the State, leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Lalji Tandon, today underlined the need for a POTA-like legislation to firmly deal with ISI agents and extremists.
He said the Vidhan Sabha had lost its relevance as the government took no cognizance of his repeated warnings that the State was becoming a haven for terrorists. The government was not taking strict measures for political reasons and the result was there for all to see, he added. The government did not take any suggestions seriously nor did it fulfill promises made in the House, what to say about any initiative to deal with terrorists with an iron hand, he said.
Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Tandon demanded immediate imposition of President’s Rule in the State and alleged that a few ministers of the Mulayam Cabinet were in constant touch with the ‘D’ Company, ISI and other terrorist outfits. Secret agencies did not take action due to political pressure and money power and as such none of the arrested extremists could be sent to jail for long time.

He alleged that a corridor comprising Azamgarh-Allahabad-Gonda to Lucknow, Meerut-Moradabad-Bijnore to Saharanpur as well as in some parts of western UP had been set up where Pakistan and Bangladesh-based terrorists operated openly while the government and security agencies were sleeping leaving the State and its people at the mercy of terrorists.
Demanding an inquiry into unlimited flow of money from the Gulf and other doubtful sources in different parts of the State, including Lucknow, Tandon said funds were being made available to terrorists and part of it was being used in illegal business and construction of dozens of residential complexes in the State capital.
Haji Yakub, a minister in the Mulayam Cabinet, vitiated the communal atmosphere by giving ‘supari’ to kill a Danish cartoonist but no action was taken against him, Tandon regretted.
