Taxi, auto strike in Kerala called off

The two-day old strike by autorickshaws and taxis in Kerala was called off on Thursday after the Government agreed to increase its minimum fares.

The two-day old strike by autorickshaws and taxis in Kerala was called off on Thursday after the Government agreed to increase its minimum fares. An agreement in the regard was reached during talks held between Transport Minister N Shakthan and leaders of joint action council of trade unions of autorickshaws and taxis here.

The minimum charge for auto has been increased from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and the kilometre charge from Rs 4.50 to Rs 5. In the case of taxi, the minimum charge has been increased from Rs 35 to Rs 50 and kilometre charge from Rs 6 to Rs 6.50.The new charges would come into effect from 26th January and a notification would be issued, Shaktan told reporters after the meeting.

Joint action council leader, Kadakampalli Surendran said the strike has been called off as their main demand for fare hike was met by the Government.
