If you are an eight-year-old student of Class II and don’t know the meaning of Sangam — which means a confluence of rivers — there’s every chance that you may be in for a severe physical attack by your teacher.
Shweta Patel is a student of Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Korba, about 220 km from here. She was asked exactly the same question by her teacher Parasram Bhaina, 37, at a question-answer session.
Shweta didn’t know the answer. She was rebuked. It was fine up to this point. But the infuriated teacher snatched a pin from Shweta and stabbed her right eye with it.
Devprasad Patel, the child’s father, said, “As if rebuking was not enough, the teacher pierced her right eye.”
Shweta rushed home and narrated the incident to her parents. Bhaina promised to bear the costs of Shweta’s treatment, but later ran away. The parents then lodged a police complaint against the teacher.
Collector of Korba Ashok Agrawal told Hindustan Times that he had asked the police to trace the teacher. “The sub-divisional magistrate has been asked to investigate it,” he said, but refused to take any action against the school.
Shweta was immediately taken to the state capital. But according to a team of specialists, the injury was too deep for her to regain eyesight.
