FOLLOWING THE amendment in the Tehbazari Act, the Kanpur Municipal Corporation has been entrusted with the power to tighten the noose around cable operators, private bus owners and those pilling heaps of rubble on roads.

The amended Act has come into effect from March 4, the date on which the gazette was published.

As per the amended Tehbazari Act, which form part of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation Act 1959, a private bus owner would have to cough up Rs 100 per day for loading, unloading of passengers, beside stationing it on the roadside or footpath under the jurisdiction of the KMC. However, bus owners, tractor-trolley, tempo and taxi would be charged tehbazari only if they use the place other than identified by the KMC.

Similarly, cable operators would have to now pay 50 paise per metre per month for cable wires spread on the roads and lanes and by-lanes under KMC jurisdiction. Similarly, for putting up transformers etc, the concerned person would have to pay Rs 20 per square metre per month.

In yet another amendment, the KMC could now realise a penalty of Rs 450 per square metre for the first three month for the pilling of the rubble. The charge would increase to Rs 600 and subsequently to Rs 750.

The new gazette also states that in case of non-payment of dues within stipulated time, the offender would have to pay a penalty of Rs 500 in a fixed time. After which Rs 20 per day extra for the additional time taken against the deadline would be taken.

Similarly, Rs 50 would be charged from tractor trolley, public carrier, tempo, taxi and mini bus per day for loading, unloading and using public road and footpaths etc.

Besides, during mela time or any other occasion, the municipal commissioner has been given the power to fix new place for tehbazari and subsequently charge according to norms.
