Terror camps in Pak intact: Pranab

Pakistan is yet to reduce troops along its border, the defence minister said.

Expressing concern over increased infiltration from across the border, India on Wednesday upped the ante on cross-border terrorism, saying that terrorist training camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir continue to remain intact.

"As the snow melts during these months, we will have to remain extra vigilant," Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the Rajya Sabha during question hour.

Recent reports showed that several launching camps along the Line of Control (LOC) from Rajouri to Gurez Sector were activated where militants have been kept in readiness for infiltration, he said.

There were no reports to suggest that Pakistan had reduced troops along its border, he said, stressing the point that the deployment of troops for counter terrorist operations was based on the threat perception and was constantly reviewed by the government.

The army has killed 560 terrorists in various operations till July 27 this year he said, adding that 71 officers and soldiers were killed by terrorists in 2005 as on July 25.

The cross-border terror issue was revived after sensational disclosures over a month back about Pakistan Information Minister Sheikh Rashid mentoring terrorists at a training camp in Rawalpindi.

In the joint statement signed by the two sides during Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's visit to India April 18, Pakistan had reaffirmed its commitment to not allow its territory for the use of terrorism against India.
