The US supped with the devil, we’re paying the price

The US supped with the devil, we’re paying the price
With reference to Maleeha Lodhi’s article Grasp the nettle (October 19), the US has always tried to act as the world’s policeman but is, in fact, responsible for engendering Islamic terrorism by arming mercenaries in Pakistan and Afghanistan to counter the Soviet influence in Asia. Now, after the USSR’s collapse, the monster it had created is devouring its own creators, which shouldn’t surprise us.

Unwilling to make a difference
I agree with Rajdeep Sardesai’s views in Drowning things out (Beyond the Byte, October 16) that Mumbai’s self-centred residents are no different from those in other metros or even small towns if a low voting turnout is taken as an indicator of prevailing apathy. In fact, it’s the middle-class that questions our politicians and their strategies, but it chickens out when it’s time to vote for change. The crux of the matter is that those who make up the middle-class are happy in their isolation.

Rajdeep Sardesai has blown the lid off the financial capital of the country, Mumbai, by exposing the self-absorbed mindset of its residents. So many incidents in the recent past that have made headlines have failed to elicit a response from apathetic Mumbaikars. They seem to have forgotten their responsibility both as
residents of the resilient city and as citizens of India.
