INTRODUCE THEATRE into school curriculum. No, not for theatre’s sake, but as a medium to teach a lot many things which conventional education fails in.
Theatre teaches team work, enhances expression and inculcates a feeling of caring and sharing. No books can ever teach these virtues so effectively, says eminent theatre personality Dolly Basu, who is in the State capital these days.
And above all discipline, she adds in the same breath. Basu who is shouldering the responsibility of Choop Katha, said: “In this contemporary world it is absolutely imperative for the child to arm himself with these quality. Not only does it shape a child’s personality but also helps kids to come to terms with present social structure. With the concept of joint family losing prominence, children need to develop qualities that increases their ability to understand.”
Though, unlike others, she believes that theatre always thrived despite all challenges and crisis. She says: “Theatre has never had a smooth run. Finance has always been a problem. Lack of knowledgeable people in theatre is another crisis. Mere parroting lines of the script and delivering it from the stage doesn’t make you an artist. It’s lot more than what actually meets the eyes.”
“An artiste got to be aware about history, literature, music, fine art and many other things. He or she should be fully aware of all the streams. No wonder, people like Utpal Dutta, Bijon Bhattacharya and many others have left a mark on the stage. They are such knowledgeable people,” she said while taking a dig at the modern concept of idolizing people that has eventually compromised with dedication, hard work and commitments.
