Three Amarnath pilgrims killed in road accident

The Tata Sumo, carrying the pilgrims, was on its way to Jammu from Srinagar when it skidded off the road.

Three Amarnath pilgrims from Gujarat were killed and five others injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling fell into a stream near Udhampur town on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, police on Monday said.

The Tata Sumo, carrying the pilgrims, was on its way to Jammu from Srinagar when it skidded off the road and fell into the Balli Nallah on Sunday evening after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve, they said.

The victims were rushed to the Udhamput district hospital where three passengers were declared brought dead, the sources said adding one of the seriously injured patients has been referred to the Government Medical College hospital in Jammu for specialised treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Dhoni Bhai, Bharti Bhai and Panchnan Bhai, all residents of Gujarat.

The four injured also hail from Gujarat, while the driver of the vehicle Fayaz, who among the injured, belongs to Hazratbal area of Srinagar city, the sources said.
