The attack on Kathiraveli town in the district of Batticaloa was carried out by security forces, they said.

The attack came as troops consolidated their gains further north at the town of Sampur.

Meanwhile, diplomatic sources said Norway's ambassador to Sri Lanka Hans Brattskar was meeting with Tiger leaders in the north of the island on Wednesday in a bid to save the troubled ceasefire.

The Tigers warned last week that they will completely pull out of the February 2002 truce if the military captured Sampur in the Trincomalee district.
