Flights out of Delhi to most of the popular and not-so-far tourist destinations and other metros are booked. Those still available will cost a bomb.
Delhiites have taken a flight out of the Capital to make the most of Independence Day, which has stretched the weekend up to Monday, and it is telling on fares. The economy fare for a morning flight to Mumbai typically costs a little more than Rs 3,000, but this weekend, it will cost anything between Rs 15,000 and Rs 18,000. Delhi-Chandigarh ticket is up 500% — from Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000."There are absolutely no seats on our flights to metros and even smaller towns this weekend," said a senior Air India official, who didn’t wish to be named.
"People are also flocking to southeast Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand and those flights are full too."
It is not just air tickets even hotel accommodations are scarce. "Hotels at places like Goa, Kerala and Shimla are completely booked," said Ankur Bhatia, executive director of Bird Group, a travel technology company.
