Three die after falling in soak pit in Surat

Three farm labourers died after falling into a soak pit in Gaviyar village on the outskirts of the city here today, police said.

Three farm labourers died after falling into a soak pit in Gaviyar village on the outskirts of the city here today, police said.

The incident took place in Gaviyar village on the Dumas road when a labour Nitin Vasava (42) was lifting bag full of urea placed over a lid covering the soak pit in the farm of one Satish Patel, they said.

According to police, the lid of soak pit broke and Nitin fell into it.

Two other labourers working on the same farm Mahesh Vasava (22) and Surendra Vasava (19) jumped into the pit to save Nitin but they too got trapped, police said, adding that all three died of on the spot.

All three bodies were fished out by officials of the fire department and sent for post-mortem, they added.

All three belong to a village in Uchhal taluka in Tapi district and used to come for work as farm labourer in Patel's farm every year, they added.

They further said that investigation into the matter was on and the cause of death would be known after the post-mortem report, they said.
