In the city, over 10,000 police personnel have been deputed, especially in sensitive areas and vantage points.

Police said the organisers of the festivities in various parts of the city have also been asked to be fully alert in and around their respective areas.

Police said organisers have also been told to install Lord Vinayaka idols only in the areas allotted last year and also immerse them a week later in the specified places.

The routes for the procession, usually culminating in the immersion of the idols, would also be provided with adequate security to avoid any untoward incident.

Bomb disposal squads, sniffer dogs and police pickets were also being placed in various places across the state.

In 1992, during a immersion procession, violence erupted in city's Triplicane area leading to police firing, killing two people. Since then the security during Vinayaka Chaturthri festival has always been tight.

However, during the past few years, the festival has been generally peaceful.
