Ranjit Sinha, 62, who on Tuesday relinquished his charge as the CBI director on superannuation, said his work and decisions during his two-year stint will be ‘best judged by time and history’.

Asked to address his colleagues, for the last time in an official capacity, a visibly emotional Ranjit Sinha spoke barely for around 200 seconds, in Hindi and without any prepared notes. According to a CBI senior officer, who attended his farewell function, Sinha said that he had kept the ‘interests of the institution, the CBI” uppermost in his work and decisions as its chief (December 2012-December 2014).

Last month, the Supreme Court had indicted him for his role in the 2-G spectrum scam and directed him to recuse from the case’s probe and prosecution.

Sinha, apparently, ‘spoke from his heart’ and received a standing ovation as he concluded his speech.

“While referring to the praise he had got from four senior officials who spoke before him, Sinha said that the recent negative media coverage on him had made him forget that people remembered him for his good work and qualities as well,” said the officer. The speakers recounted Sinha’s over 40-year-old record as an IPS officer, 11 of which were spent in CBI, and described him as ‘fearless, accessible and candid.’
