Two days of torrential rains have inundated many low-lying areas in northern parts of Punjab, causing extensive damage to mud houses and severely disrupting traffic.

Four members of a family, including children, were killed and another four injured on Thursday when their house collapsed in Rawalpindi.

Local authorities said water also entered shanty houses in Rawalpindi after rains caused a sewerage stream to overflow.

A mother and her five children also died in the Pind Dadan Khan district when the roof of their house caved in.

Other fatalities were reported in other rain-hit areas of Punjab and the North-Western Frontier Province.

More rains were expected in the country's northern areas during the next two days, including Pakistan-administered Kashmir, where thousands of people are still living in makeshift tents and houses after an October 8 earthquake killed an estimated 75,000 people and left about 3.5 million people homeless.
