Traffic resumed on both lanes of Durgapur Expressway on Monday morning, a day after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee suspended her two-week long dharna near the Tata Motors' small car plant in Singur.
Police said the movement of vehicular traffic, which was affected due to the TC dharna, resumed on both sides of the busy highway and the dharna platforms were being dismantled. Chairs placed on one side of the expressway have been removed to facilitate traffic movement.
However, the Tata Motors, which had suspended work at the plant, was yet to come out with a statement as to when work would resume at the 'Nano' plant.
One flank of the vital highway was opened to traffic on August 31, eight days after the TC laid siege to the car plant site blocking the Expressway, after the Calcutta High Court directed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to free the road.
Banerjee had last night announced that the dharna would be called off following the agreement with the state government after marathon talks at Raj Bhavan between her and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in the presence of Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi.
The statement issued by the Governor said that the government would respond to the demands of those farmers who have not received compensation, by means of land provided to the maximum within the project area and the rest in adjacent areas as early as possible.
