Tragedy strikes Asiad, rider dies

South Korean equestrian rider Kim Hyung Chil's horse throws him from the saddle and crushes him underfoot, reports Ajai Masand.

The sports fraternity was plunged in sorrow after a South Korean rider, Kim Hyung-Chil died after he fell from his horse on jump No. 6 of the cross-country stage in the three-day eventing competition at the Doha Racing and Equestrian Club on Thursday.

According to preliminary reports, Chil's horse, Bundaberg Black, got entangled in one of the obstacles. Chi fell ove his steed and did not regain consciousness. The rider had won a gold in the in the dressage event on Wednesday and was a silver medal winner at the 2002 Busan Asian Games.

As a mark of respect, the Korean team is planning to pull out of the event, although they are being persuaded not to do so. A minute's silence was also observed at all venues.

On a day when almost all outdoor competitions were cancelled and rescheduled for the next day, for India - and the thousands of expatriates and locals — the disappointment of not watching the Indian women compete against the Chinese-Taipei in the final of the tennis team event was immense.
