Train services resumed on the Ambala-New Delhi section of the railways today morning after the track, which had sunk at a few places due to floods, was strengthened with sand bags.

Train traffic was stopped on Thursday by railway authorities after the track started sinking near Shahbad town in Haryana, 65 km from Chandigarh.

Trains on this busy route, which connects New Delhi with Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, were diverted via Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. A few trains were cancelled while all other trains were running much behind schedule.

"Traffic has been restored on the Ambala-Delhi section this morning (Friday). The track, which was sinking at places, has been strengthened," a railway official at Ambala told IANS.

The track had started sinking as flood water accumulated in fields on both sides of the railway line, leading to loosening of the track embankment.

Railway authorities put up hundreds of sandbags to strengthen the railway track and stop it from sinking further.
