Intensifying its drive against unauthorised passenger vehicles, the Haryana transport department has issued challans to 6,006 vehicles in three months and nearly Rs. 4 crore has been collected as compounding fee.
Stating this on Tuesday, additional chief secretary, transport, Raminder Jakhu said the vehicles were fined under Section 192-A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1998, for plying without valid permits between April and June this year. He said that 432 vehicles were seized or detained during the same period.
Jakhu added that from April 2011 till March 2012, as many as 24,305 vehicles were booked for offence under Section 192-A and 1,651 vehicles were seized or detained.
He said that in a number of cases, vehicles were being used by owners for carrying passengers without obtaining the permits from transport authorities or in violation to the conditions of the permit.
He said that instances of goods vehicles ferrying passengers had also been observed, adding that such vehicles were generally driven at a higher than permissible speed limit and were poorly maintained.
Apart from risking the lives of passengers, they also evade taxes causing revenue loss to the government.
