HE HAS resorted to a unique way of creating awareness on pollution menace —trotting the globe on his bicycle with the simple message: Environment pollution is a threat to human race.
The lone crusader, Anbu Charles, was in the city on Sunday. Talking to HT Allahabad Live, Anbu, a resident of Namakkal district in Tamil Nadu, shared details of his mission and the endeavour.
"I have covered 10 states till now, after starting the journey on April 22, 2005 and travelled almost 9375 km. Everyday I cover almost 35 kilometres on cycle. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Kerala, Pondicherry, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Nepal and Uttar Pradesh have been covered and now I plan to cover other states. I have also been to Nepal and plan to visit other countries," said Anbu.
I make it a point to give a lecture on pollution in at least two schools in each city and I also distribute pamphlets which contain the messages regarding the pollution caused by the use of plastic, etc. People must shun such practices which pose threat to our environment," he said.
Anbu has received certificates from several schools for his self-less service. Why has he chosen a cycle as a means of transport? "It is the only vehicle which does not cause any pollution. Imagine, at present we are living in the age when we are consuming packaged drinking water. We are drifting away from doing any physical work and depend more on machines. This has invited too many diseases. I think this is the time to wake up to these issues before it is too late," he said.
