Students facing the problem of shortage of textbooks can now turn to the internet for an alternative, with the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) putting the study materials on the web.
Digitalisation of textbooks, an initiative started by NCERT this year, is on in full swing and about 51 books have already been put on the web for class IX, X, XI and XII.
"If there is any delay in getting the textbooks, the studies of students will not be hampered now. They can download the books from the web and go ahead," an NCERT official said. He said the council will publish all the textbooks from class IX to XII shortly on the web.
"The efforts will lead to a situation where teachers begin to adopt a more modular approach, rather than a sequential approach to teaching and learning through access to a variety of teaching and reference material," he said.
Apart from helping students in far flung areas in the country where the textbooks reach late, the students reading NCERT textbooks abroad would be also be benefited, he said.
Students in 19 foreign countries having CBSE affiliated schools follow the NCERT textbooks. He said the overseas market was growing for NCERT books. Apart from students, a large number of scholars in foreign countries pursuing research in Indian history, polity, culture and economy can also refer to NCERT books as resource material, he said.
