A tribal man in Chhattisgarh has reportedly sold his newborn twin sons for Rs 100 -- to buy food for his impoverished family. But the couple that 'bought' the twins said their intention was to adopt them.
In industrial town of Korba on Saturday, Samaru, 24, who hails from Korba district's Simkeda village, handed over his one-day-old twins to a Christian couple who wanted to adopt children, according to local media reports.
The childless couple said they have adopted the twins and will take care of them.
The couple, however, denied they had 'purchased' the kids and said it was purely an adoption, adding that they paid Rs 100 to the father, as he had no money to return to his village, 250 km northeast of Raipur.
The kids' mother died an hour after the delivery on Friday. The couple already had five kids and the father has been struggling to feed them.
Samaru belongs to the endangered Pahari Korba tribe, living in the state's Jashpur, Surguja and Korba districts, with a population of about 33,000 and a literacy figure below four per cent.
The tribals live mostly in isolation, with no access to modern amenities. The government has initiated several measures to save the tribe from extinction and bring them into the mainstream society, though the tribals have always been reluctant to cooperate.
