The first encounter took place near the mental hospital in Cantonment area at 8.30 p.m.

Two miscreants had made an abortive attempt to loot a man and his nephew after firing shots at them.

The nephew, 22-year-old, Pradeep Tiwari injured on the shoulder, along with local residents managed to nab one miscreant, Kamruddin, a resident of Jansa in Varanasi while the other fled.

The man was handed over to the area’s sub-inspector (S-I) on the spot. The S-I made Kamruddin sit pillion on his motorcycle to head for the police station.
En route, Kamruddin managed to get hold of the S-I’s service revolver and compelled him to stop so that he could escape.

The alarmed S-I informed the police. The cops launched a massive combing operation. During the process, they spotted Kamruddin near the mental hospital. On seeing the police, he opened fire and the cops retaliated gunning him down in the process.

In the second encounter, the gunned-down miscreant, Asharfi Qureshi, was wanted in connection for the murder of a newspaper hawker, Kishan Verma in Ramrepur area under Cantonment police station. The murder had taken place three days ago. The accomplice of the slain criminal managed to flee.

Acting on a tip-off that the assailant of the hawker was present in Phulwaria area to commit a crime, the cops laid a trap in Lahartara area and launched a search operation for the criminals.

They were spotted riding on a motorcycle. When the criminals were signalled to stop, the man riding pillion opened fire on the cops while the motorcycle driver tried to flee towards Manduadeeh road.

The cops also opened fire on the fleeing criminals and resultantly the pillion rider was killed. The other one escaped in the darkness.
