Two Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces early on Tuesday in Warangal district of Telangana, police said.
"Two Maoists – one male and one female – were killed in the encounter which took place around 7:30am this morning. The Maoists are suspected to be members of the Khammam- Karimnagar- Warangal divisional committee. We are ascertaining their identity," Ambar Kishor Jha, Warangal's superintendent of police, told HT.
The incident, the first major Maoist-related one in the state since its formation in June last year, occurred at Somalagadda in Govindaraopet mandal under Pasara police station limits.
The encounter took place when special police teams were on a combing operation in the forests of Warangal district which abuts Chhattisgarh. The outlawed group's members are said to have crossed over from Chhattisgarh and camping in the forest since the last few days.
Search operations are still on to locate more Maoists, police officials said.
Warangal, adjoining Karimnagar, Khammam and Adilabad districts were the hotbed of the Maoist activity in the 90's. However, the major Maoist action shifted to the neighboring states of Chhattisgarh and Orissa during the last decade, leaving the region in relative peace.
The increase in Maoist activities, like holding a people's court in Karimnagar district a few months back, points to their intention to regain their hold in the Telangana region.
