Security forces gunned down a second militant on Sunday during an operation to thwart a major infiltration bid in Machil sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.
According to the Army, the fresh exchange took place on Saturday evening after the combing operation team established contact with hiding militants in Machil of Kupwara district, more than 100 km north of Srinagar.
“Around late evening, the troops conducting the search discovered a militant hiding in the area. In the exchange of fire that followed, one more militant was killed, thus bringing the total number of militants killed to two,” said army spokesman Lt Col N N Joshi.
The army on Saturday morning spotted a group of infiltrating militants. The initial exchange of fire resulted in a militant being killed on Saturday morning.
Preliminary reports suggest six to seven militants were part of the infiltrating group, which sneaked the Line of Control (LoC) near Sardari Nar into the valley. The infiltrating militants opened fire from sophisticated weapons on the the army’s 56 RR and 69 BSF near Jalandar Post, situated near thick jungles.
The army succeeded to recover a body yesterday. One AK-47 and other war- like stores were recovered from the encounter site. However, heavy downpour hampered the search operation.

Infiltration attempts go up in summers as snow melts from the peaks and passes on the LoC. A number of bids have been foiled since the summer set in in the valley, particularly in north Kashmir.
