Six students - all from Ghaziabad - had gone for a picnic near the lake in Surajkund area in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Surajkund police were informed about the incident around 11am. A caller said two students had drowned in the lake. The police rushed to the spot and divers were pressed into service to find the students.

The deceased students were later identified as Vivek Sharma and Alon John. They had gone with their friends Lokesh, Saurab Kumar, Gautam and Avinash - all hailing from Vaishali in Ghaziabad - for a picnic near the lake.

Police said the students study in different colleges in Delhi and Ghaziabad. While Vivek Sharma is BCom student of Jagannath Institute of Management and Studies in Lajpat Nagar, Alan John is an English honours student of Shyam Lal College under Delhi University.

A large number of people had gathered at the spot as word of the drowning spread. The local police called Navy divers to help them find the bodies.
