This is a love story that is yet to get over a political barrier — literally. Engaged four years ago, two Chennai doctors belonging to rival political families have been waiting patiently for the woman’s father to get a nod for the union from his political boss and now Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

Bride-to-be Lassya, 26, daughter of senior AIADMK Lok Sabha member M Thambidurai is engaged to Naveen, 30, son of veteran Tamil Nadu Congress leader C Gnanasekharan, whose party is in the opposition with ally DMK in the state.

Not willing to wait any longer while her father dilly-dallied over the marriage, Lassya decided to take matters into her own hands. One fine day she walked into Jayalalithaa’s swanky Poes Garden residence with a letter urging her to help the couple get married.

Thambidurai was unavailable for comment but Gnanasekharan said he understood his predicament. “In the AIADMK, it’s a no-no to be seen rubbing shoulders with the ‘enemy’ even at social gatherings,” he said. “I hope Thambidurai speaks to his leader soon.”
