By using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Andhra Pradesh police will put in place a close-range surveillance system to keep an eye on the Maoist activities in the dense forests of the state, a top police official said on Sunday.
Police are also in the process of procuring a helicopter for anti-naxal and rescue operation in the state.
"The trial run for the UAV has been done. The UAV flight will be deployed to keep a close watch on any movement (of Maoists) and for detection of explosive dumps on the ground. It will take images of their movement and send pictures to the base station through satellite," state DGP V Dinesh Reddy told reporters.
"The UAV will start operations very shortly in the naxal-affected districts of the state. Besides that, a 17-seater helicopter is also being procured by the AP Police for anti-Naxal operations and for rescue operation," he said.
The ministry of home affairs will be providing the funds towards the expenses for the operation and maintenance of the chopper, he added.
About the strength of Maoists, the DGP said that there are 340 underground cadres in the state. "They (maoists) are on the run. Out of this, 200 are in other states, while 140 are living on the bordering areas of AP."
