As the security forces intensified anti Ulfa operation in the state, militants of banned outfit Ulfa shot dead nine surrendered militants on the suspicion that the former militants might provide information about Ulfa militants’ hideouts to security forces. To escape Ulfa militants’ bid on life, some surrendered militants took shelters at security forces’ base in the state.
A sense of insecurity has gripped the surrendered militants of Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Barpeta, and Tinsukia and Baska district following the killing of their colleagues in the last twenty days.
It may be mentioned that surrendered Ulfa (Sulfa) activist Rajkumar Changmai of Moran under Dibrugarh district was shot dead by Ulfa cadres at his residence on October 11. Ulfa cadres also killed Hitlar Hazarika of Kakopahar and Dilip Bora of Pengari in Tinsukia district on October 16 and 17 respectively. Both were Sulfa activists.
On October 18, another Sulfa man Kamal Hazarika was gunned down at his dhaba in Tengakhat under Dibrugarh district. After killing of these four sulfa activists, Ulfa militant announced that they were killed for spying against Ulfa cadres.
In lower Assam district of Baska, a former militant of Bodoland Liberation Tiger (BLT), Ulfa militant gunned down Gautom Lahkar on October 10 while he was standing in front of his home in the evening. Another former BLT militant, Nagen Boro was shot dead by Ulfa militant at Paneri under Udalguri district on October 19. Police confirmed Ulfa’s hand in killing of both the surrendered BLT cadres. The erstwhile BLT cadres were known for they’re anti Ulfa activities. There were instances that former BLT cadres joins hands with security forces to nab Ulfa cadres.

{{/usCountry}}On October 8, Sulfa activist Ajai Medhi was gunned down at Sarthebari under Barpeta district . Ulfa militant shot dead Sashi Phukon at Baihata Chariali and Bipul Das at Dumuni under Baska district on October 16 and 21 respectively.
After killing of four sulfa activists in Dibrugarh and Tinskuia district, some former Ulfa militants of both districts took shelters at Army camp in Chabua under Dibrugarh district. In Barpeta, Kamrup and Baska district too, lower ranked surrendered militants approached police administration for shelter in police reserves.
In Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district, after re launching of counter insurgency operation against Ulfa, Army had sought active support and cooperation from former Ulfa militants. Sources said that Army used some former Ulfa militants as their informers against Ulfa activities in the districts.
Top police and Army officials are tightlipped about the recent development regarding surrendered militants’ shelter at security forces’ base. In 1998 –99, both police and Army involved surrendered militants in their anti –insurgency operation. There were reports of section of sulfa activists’ movement with police and Army in anti Ulfa operation in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh district.
