Sunil Bansal, the key RSS man in Uttar Pradesh, who had teamed up with PM Narendra Modi’s chief strategist Amit Shah in the state for the Lok Sabha elections has been appointed as the new state general secretary (organisation).

Bansal, 45 who was a full-time Sangh pracharak replaces Rakesh Jain who has been attached with the BJP office in Delhi for now.

The move indicates that an organisational revamp in UP is on the cards as well. It also indicates party’s preference for the young. Among the select leaders trusted by Shah to work on ‘Mission UP’, Bansal would now be the crucial link between the RSS and the BJP. He would also be crucial in taking all party decisions with 2017 state polls in mind.

The decision to appoint Bansal was taken at a meeting of all organisation secretaries in Delhi. Thus, much in the same way as Shah’s appointment as UP in-charge ahead of the LS polls exhibited BJP’s eagerness to do well in the 80-MP state, Bansal’s appointment is also being seen as a move aimed with 2017 in mind.

The saffron think tank earlier worried at the sharp slide in BJP’s stock in UP — before a Modi-fied BJP rose like a phoenix in the state winning 73 (along with two seats of ally Apna Dal) out of 80 seats, it had actually slipped to fourth position after even the Congress —now believes that “mission 2017 is now achievable”.
