In the wake of recent Maoist attacks in Chattisgarh and West Bengal in which several people were killed, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday directed police officers to maintain a close vigil on their activities in the state.
"A close vigil should be kept on activities of the naxalites in the state and security of jails where members of naxal organisations are lodged should be stepped up," she said at a high-level meeting to review law and order in the state.
Mayawati said it was due to efforts of the state government that Naxals have not succeeded in committing any major incident in Uttar Pradesh.
She also directed the police officers to identify Bangladeshi citizens living illegally in the state and to take necessary action.
The Chief Minister also directed the police to launch a special drive against dreaded criminals and said there was need to upgrade the Special Task Force.
"The government will not compromise on the issue of law and order and stern action would be taken against officers who fail to improve their performance," Mayawati said.
