The community policing, regular combing and campaign against Maoist ideology has helped the Uttar Pradesh police to check the activities of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) in the red corridor of UP- Sonebhadra, Mirzapur and Chandauli.
Talking to HT, IG (Law and Order) RK Vishwakrama who was posted in Maoist infested area of Chattisgarh during his stint in central reserve police force (CRPF) said in Chattisgarh the administration as well as the police officer hardly visit the tribal areas considered the base of the Maoists. There is hardly any communication between the tribals and administration. The tribals are easily influenced with the Maoists ideology. There is hatred among the tribals against the administration and politicians.
"In contrast the tribal dominated villages located in the Maoist infested area are on radar of the district administration" Vishwakrama said and added "along with the senior officers the lekhpals, patwaris, the in-charges of the police stations, village development officers and panchayat officers visit these villages regularly. They have been able to generate confidence among the traibls and assured them protect from the Maoists".
Along with the Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar police joint operations have been carried out against the Peoples Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) the military wing of the CPI (Maoist) and some of the top PLGA commanders have been killed or they have surrendered before the police, Vishwakarma said.
A senior police officer said the CPI (Maoist) have divided UP into three parts each under the control of different committee. The area north of River Ganga is managed by Utarakhand, North Bihar and UP special area committee, while the central and west UP is under West- Central area committee. Mirzapur, Chandauli and Sonbhadra is under Bihar- Jharkhand area committee.

In UP the Maoists have killed three policemen in Majgan area of Chanduli on November 20, 2004 with triggering explosion. Next day 14 PAC jawans were killed in Naugarh area of the district.
Though the police have been able to check the activities of the PLGA yet the Maoist have been holding courts as well as levying rangadri tax on the contractors and traders in Sonbhadra and Chandauli area. An intelligence department officer said we have identified the villagers who are suspected to be sympathizer of Maoists and providing them shelter as well as recruit. Along with organizing health camps the administration is organizing sports meet in the villages, distribution of utensil, textbooks, bags and textbooks among the tribal children.
We have been able to thwart the CPI (Maoist) plan to connect the red corridor with Nepal with expanding influence in Ghazipur, Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Shravast districts, the police officer said.
