A teenage student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room at a Navodaya Vidyalaya in Azamgarh of Uttar Pradesh after being scolded and thrashed by the officiating principal of the school, police and students have said.
Enraged by the incident on Tuesday, other students of the institution set the principal’s motorcycle on fire and staged a protest. A large police contingent was deployed at the Navodaya Vidyalaya in Jiyanpur to control the situation.
Students alleged the officiating principal, PN Shukla, had summoned 17-year-old Ashutosh Kumar to his office and thrashed the student over some issue. They further alleged that Shukla had threatened to expel Kumar for a month.
Shukla reportedly asked Kumar to go home. The student went from the principal’s room to his room in the hostel. When Kumar’s roommate reached the room at noon on Tuesday, he found the student hanging from the ceiling and raised an alarm.
Police said other students reached the room and informed the college staff about the incident. College staff members rushed Kumar to the nearby primary health centre, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
As news of Kumar’s death spread, students went on the rampage and reportedly broke chairs and a table in Shukla’s room. They also set his motorcycle on fire. Shukla managed to flee from the institution.

{{/usCountry}}Later, sub-divisional magistrate Himanshu Gupta and police inspector Yogendra Bahadur Singh reached the Navodaya Vidyalaya and assured the students that strict action will be taken against anyone responsible for Kumar’s death. The assurance calmed the students.
Police has sent Kumar’s body for an autopsy. Circle officer Nand Kumar Ojha said, “Preliminarily investigations revealed that the student took the extreme step after being scolded. A case is being registered in the matter. A team has been set up to investigate the matter. Strict action will be ensured against those found guilty.” He said the situation was completely under control.
