The plan has been formulated under the ongoing police modernisation scheme in the state, principal secretary home, Alok Sinha said here today.

Performing commendable work for the state police, the dog squad traced a rape and murder accused, who had been evading arrest for a long time, in Barabanki. The accused was later awarded capital punishment, Sinha said.

This is not not the only case in which the state's police force took help from dog squads. The squad has helped solve 234 criminal cases and provided vital clues to the force during the past one year, he said.

He recounted a murder case in Varanasi last year that was solved with the dog squad's help. The accused admitting to his guilt had revealed the entire conspiracy after being tracked down by the squad, Sinha said.

The squad had also assisted in working out a theft case outside UP in Bharatpur, Rajasthan last year, Sinha said.

New squads have recently been set up in Muzaffarnagar, Etawah, Gorakhpur and Varanasi districts, he added.
