The Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre has allocated Rs 34,000 crore in this year’s budget for education sector to implement various schemes in order to fulfill the ideals of late K Kamaraj, who worked for ensuring education for all, Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan said on Saturday.
A sum of Rs 13,100 crore had been earmarked for “Sarva Shiksha Abhaiyan” (education for all) scheme while the higher education sector had been allocated Rs 2,000 crore, he said at a function in Sencottah, about 70 km from here here, for celebrating the birth anniversary of Kamaraj.
The Centre had allocated Rs 8,000 crore for providing noon meal to school children across the coutry.
He said the number of out of shool children in the country had already dropped to 76 lakh now from 3.20 crore in 2001 and the Centre was hopeful of achieving nil dropout by the end of 2011.
He noted the Tamil Nadu Government was also taking steps to improve the education sector and has launched a scheme -- “success” -- under which all students below 16 would get quality eduation by 2015.
On the occasion, he gave away Kamaraj awards to four philanthropists of the district who had contributed to the education sector.
