Earlier, the roadways announced that it will introduce at least 100 CNG-run buses in the city from March 1, 2006. But, they were able to introduce only diesel-run buses instead, which was objected by the Private City Bus Union through a petition in the High Court.

Since, plying of CNG-run vehicles is made mandatory in the first phase starting from April 1, 2006, the private bus owners have been asked to convert their old buses by using CNG kit.

“The State roadways has also decided to introduce new CNG buses and they are expected to be ready by the end of May 2006,” said Regional Transport Officer BK Gupta, while talking to the Hindustan Times.

In the first phase, GAIL would provide 18,000 kg of CNG per day from its refuelling centre at Fajalganj. However, in the second phase three more refuelling centres would be established at Vijai Nagar, Naramau and Kalyanpur, said sources.

According to sources, initial quantity would be enough for 100 buses, 1500 tempos and 1000 auto-rickshaws. Therefore, the RTO authorities have issued notices to the bus owners to convert their buses, which are more than 9 years old, with CNG kit, stated Dwivedi.

He said about conversion of tempo’s into CNG would be finalised in the coming week after discussing with the SP, traffic.
