US President George W Bush has announced some $28 million in aid for United Nations refugee relief operations in Africa.

"I hereby determine that it is important to the national interest that up to 28 million be made available from the US Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund to support unexpected, urgent humanitarian needs related to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees," the president said in a statement on Thursday.

The funds primarily will be used to "protect and assist internally displaced persons" in Somalia, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo," Bush said.
