USAID gives Rs 5.68 crore to tsunami-hit TN

The USAID on Tuesday announced another Rs 5.68 crore in grants for disaster relief in the tsunami-affected areas of Tamil Nadu.

The Unites States Agency for International Development (USAID) on Tuesday announced another Rs 5.68 crore (1.3 million dollars) in grants for disaster relief in the tsunami-affected areas of Tamil Nadu.

The latest aid brings the US Government's assistance through USAID India to more than Rs 13.54 crore (3.1 million dollars), a communiqué from the US Embassy.

Non-governmental partners based in India will expand the focus of the American assistance to build temporary shelters and begin rehabilitation in selected sites using the fresh grants, the release said.

A cash-for-work programme led by World Vision India will construct 2500 temporary shelters under a grant of nearly Rs 3.93 crore (9,00,000 dollars ).

A grant for more than Rs 1.92 crore (4,40,000 dollars ) to Project Concern International, India, will fund recovery and rehabilitation in four villages.
