Police in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district on Sunday booked two children, aged less than 10 years, for allegedly issuing life threats to a businessman for extorting money. Senior officials have ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Acting on a complaint registered by Dinesh Pathak, a resident of the Govindpur area in Mathura, police on Sunday registered the case against the two children, aged eight and seven, of the same area. Under the law governing juveniles, children under 18 involved in any violation of law cannot be named.
Both the children were on Sunday evening brought to Mathura's Highway police station, where a case was registered against them. However, the children were later set free, after the intervention of some local journalists.
"An inquiry has been initiated into the case. It's really surprising how children aged six or seven years can indulge in extortion," district police chief P D Paulson told IANS over telephone from Mathura, about 300 km from Lucknow.
On the completion of the inquiry, strict action would be taken against the police officials who booked the two children for extortion, he added.
