A mother-son duo was busy shopping at CP Tank on Wednesday afternoon, when they received a call from their neighbour saying that their house had been robbed.
The police said two unidentified men stole valuables worth around Rs 9.5 lakh from the first-floor residence of Ratan Shah (50) in Feroza Mansion at Tardeo’s Tata Colony.
At 4 pm, when domestic help Pocharam Mali (17), who was alone in home, stepped out to dump garbage, two unidentified men allegedly threatened him with a chopper and barged into the house, the police said.
They tied his hands and gagged him, the police added.
“The duo entered the bedroom and stole Rs 5.3 lakh, gold and silver jewellery, two diamond bangles and silver utensils,” said Senior Inspector Vilas Joshi.
“After about half-an-hour, Mali managed to untie his hands. He rang the doorbell of neighbour Girish Borat and narrated the incident. Subsequently, Borat called up Shah,” said a relative, who did not wish to be named.
The police have registered a case of robbery against the two unidentified men.
“Based on the descriptions given by Mali, we are preparing the sketches of the two men who were in 20s,” said Joshi. “Initially it appeared that Mali may have staged the entire incident, but following his interrogation we have ruled out this possibility.”

{{/usCountry}}Shah, the police said, had been residing at the flat with her son Rishav (20), a first-year Commerce student at HR College, while her married daughter resides in Mazgaon.
Shah’s husband had deserted her 15 years ago. Her brother Suresh Jain has been supporting the family.
Mumbai has seen 1,262 cases of robbery, theft, dacoity and house break-in over the past two months, of which just 347 cases were detected.
