Vande Mataram was recited on Thursday at government offices and educational institutions, including madarsas, across the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh to mark the centenary of the national song. Isolated protests by some Muslim organisations were reported too.
In Bhopal, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s song was recited at 11 am at government offices including Vallabh Bhavan, Satpura Bhavan and Vindhyachal Bhavan. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan led officials and employees in singing the national song at Vallabh Bhavan.
Reports of recitation of the Vande Mataram were also received from divisional and district headquarters including Indore, Jablapur, Gwalior, Ujjain, Rewa and Sagar.
Congress party’s Seva Dal activists observed Thursday as Vande Mataram Day. After the Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi unfurled the national tricolour ti the State Congress headquarters — Indira Bhavan, Seva Dal workers and employees of the Congress office sang the national song. At Raj Bhavan, secretary to Governor Dr Balram Jakhar, Bhupal Singh led officials and employees in singing the song.

As Vande Mataram chant reverberated across the State, employees of the Masajid Committee struck a discordant note here. The employees allegedly manhandled committee secretary Syed Waseemuddin and smashed office furniture after they were asked to recite the national song.

Sare jahan… sparks fury
Lucknow: Two persons were injured in stone-throwing by members of two communities in Meerut as children in Muslim educational institutions recited patriotic song “Sare jahan se achha” in place of Vande Mataram which was sung in schools and colleges across Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

Nagpur: About 100 students from four girls’ schools were hospitalised after they fell unconscious during Vande Mataram singing in Nagpur on Thursday.
