As part of its 150th anniversary celebrations, the University of Mumbai for the first time is hosting a five-day ‘Sesquicentennial Film Festival’ at six venues, starting February 5.

In collaboration with the Films Division and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the festival will screen 62 films — 13 award-winning films of the Mumbai Film Festival (2002, 2004 and 2006), the rest from the films division and animation films.

“Documentaries may be like textbooks. But they have their own purpose and students need to understand what documentaries are all about. We want to ensure that the festival is enjoyable and educative too,” said Kuldeep Sinha, chief producer of the films division.

With the festival being exclusive for students affiliated to the University of Mumbai and SNDT Women’s University, the screenings will be held at the university’s Marathi Bhasha Bhavan at Kalina campus, St Xavier’s College and Sophia College in South Mumbai, S.K. Somaiya College in Sion, N.M. College at Vile Parle and Kalyan’s Birla College.

Meanwhile, some colleges have also organised film appreciation, seminars, workshops on editing, script writing and filmmaking sessions. “After every two-hour film screenings, we will have 30 minutes discussion. We have also invited eminent directors to interact with the students,” said Madhav Welling, principal of N.M. College.
