In a press conference held here today, Bhopal Kirana Vyapari Mahasangh convener Motiram Wadhwani said there had been a confusion on whether sugar would be in VAT’s purview or not, but after a series of discussions with the Chief Minister and the ministers for Finance and Commercial Taxes the matter has been sorted out.

“We’re grateful to the media, especially Hindustan Times, for taking up the issue and help us to solve it,” he added. Association spokesman Anupam Agarwal said, if the issue had not been solved, the traders would have been compelled to go on indefinite strike from today. “We’re especially grateful to Finance Minister Raghavji who has clearly said that sugar won’t be taxed in 2006-07,” stated president Kundandas Bhurani.
