Veteran Indian newspaper journalist Russy K Karanjia has died, his daughter said Saturday. He was 95. Karanjia passed away at his home Friday night, said daughter Rita Mehta. "He died of old age," she said. Karanjia was cremated in Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital, where he spent most of his life.
He began his career with the
Times of India
in the late 1930s then in 1941 founded
Blitz
, a weekly tabloid devoted to investigative journalism. Karanjia spoke most proudly of his time covering World War II for
Blitz
. The tabloid folded in the mid-1990s and Karanjia was seldom heard from after that.
"Karanjia was a respected veteran journalist who received acclaim and recognition within and outside India for his rich contribution to the world of journalism," India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a message to his family and friends.
