Following the assurance, a bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan directed the state government to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the riot-hit Kandhamal district.

The state government filed an affidavit giving details about the deployment of para-military forces and state police to protect the lives and properties in the areas affected by the communal clash.

The state government said a prohibitory order under section-144 was clamped in the violence-hit areas.
