Fearing that the violence at the Manesar plant of Maruti Suzuki might result in economic losses, heads of villages surrounding Industrial Model Township (IMT) Manesar have offered to help the company in any way.
The sarpanches (village heads) of six neighbouring villages — Shikopur, Khoh, Rampura, Manesar, Kakrola and Baas Fusla — met in Gurgaon on Friday. They said Wednesday's violence at the plant was a conspiracy and that outsiders were involved.
The head of Manesar village, Dharamvir Yadav, said, "The violence was a brazen act committed by workers of other areas. Our boys are seen as culprits in this case whereas no local men were hired by the plant. Such incidents are spoiling the name of nearby villages and it seems like a conspiracy to shift the plant out of Gurgaon."
The village heads also expressed concern over repeated incidents of worker unrest at the Manesar plant of the company.
"Maruti has been operating in Gurgaon for 30 years now and there has been only one incident at the Gurgaon plant. But such repeated incidents at the Manesar plant has jeopardised the future prospects of the local boys," said another sarpanch.
Om Prakash, the former sarpanch of Manesar, said, "Though no one from the management has spoken to us, we are ready to offer any kind of help they need. Our men will also work for free for some time if the company wants."
