Diplomatic hurdles have, for long, come in the way of the Indian and Pakistani nationals to move freely in each other’s countries despite having similar roots and culture.
Having stayed in Gurgaon for three months and not being able to visit India’s national capital Delhi, is one regret that four Pakistani students have at the Management Development Institute (MDI).
These students from the Lahore University of Management Sciences, Pakistan’s top MBA institution, are here as part of the exchange programme.
They would love to travel around but due to a restricted visa, they can’t move out of Gurgaon. “Staying so close to Delhi and yet not being able to visit it is a sorry feeling,” says Sabahuddin Sulaiman, whose ancestors migrated to Pakistan from Bhagalpur in Bihar during the Partition.
The students, who frequent Gurgaon’s glittering malls on the MG Road and also areas of old Gurgaon for study-related projects, identify the economic disparity in the Millennium city with their own country. “It’s the same back in our city. There is too much of economic divide,” says Ammad Aziz, another student.
Abhishek Singh, an MDI student who coordinates with exchange programme students, said, “Most of the preferences the Pakistani’s have in terms of food and culture are similar.”
