Vocational subjects could make DU entry tougher

Students who had opted for vocational subjects for their Class 12 board exams will find it tougher getting admissions in Delhi University colleges. Schools pushing students to choose vocational subjects such as physical education and homes science could lead to trouble for them. Most of the colleges do not allow students to include either of the subjects in their best-of-four percentages. Some that permit this deduct 4% for it.

“Students should be careful about the subjects they choose in Classes 11 and 12. Visiting the university websites and looking at the list of acceptable courses is always a better idea,” said Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, DU’s deputy dean of student welfare.

Even for students from the CISCE board, vocational subjects are a problem.

DU recognises environmental education — offered by the CBSE — as an academic subject but does not give the same status to environmental education, a compulsory subject for ISC exams.

“We need to one language and three academic subjects as part of the best-of-four percentage. The curriculum demands that. Schools should also keep these things in mind when they ask students to choose optional subjects. We get hundreds of such cases each year but can do nothing to help them. The university can’t recognise all the subjects offered by various boards all over India,” Tuteja added.

“I took up physical education as an optional subject in Classes 11 and 12 thinking that this would help me improve my percentage so that I get into DU. But I got to know that most colleges will not accept this as an academic subject. Even if they do, they will deduct 4% for it,” said Sonia Dogra, an aspirant from Jammu.
