THE State Government has alerted all senior officials involved with road projects to check unauthorised “Optical Fibre Cable” (OFC) laying activities of telecom operators and Internet service providers in the city.

These operators lay their lines in the night to escape vigil. Keeping this in mind, the government has clearly advised officials to ensure special watch during nights.

It may be mentioned that the city had become a battleground for private and public telecom operators and Internet service providers for grabbing a major share of the large untapped internet broadband connectivity market in rural and semi-urban areas.

A State Government circular numbering— M-01/78-1-2006 issued to all the District Magistrates which also includes chiefs of various Development Authorities and UP Avas Vikas Parishad reads: “It had come to the notice of the State Government that some private firms had been laying OFC in the city without seeking permission from the authorities in various parts of the state. It may be recalled that under the Uttar Pradesh Public Land ( Permission for Placing and Laying Optical Fibre Cable Rules 2001), under notification number 1126/78-IT-1-2001-81 Elec/98 TC issued on November 3, 2001, a private party has to enter into an alliance with the State Government and thereafter apply for a licence to carry out OFC laying work.
